Ask the Expert

Tom J. posed this issue: “My student is having some difficulty recalling the name of some common objects such as a fork. What would be a good way to teach vocabulary? Should I use picture cards, or worksheets with words?”

  1. This is Linda J. writing, but I’m quoting the expert: “I think it would be helpful to focus on building a vocabulary of everyday words for those things your student is most likely to encounter on a daily basis, such as fork, plate, pen, car, plant, dog, etc. Have you tried using the Oxford Picture Dictionary to build language skills? Before moving to a workbook or worksheets, I would also recommend working with sight word and picture flash cards to improve his overall speaking and listening vocabulary, as well as build sight vocabulary.
